It has been called “The best worst film ever made” and it’s finally coming to Galway. The Room is a romantic drama made in 2003 and despite being absolutely dire, has become a cult classic.
It has also been described by American journalist Tom Biissel as “... like a movie made by an alien who has never seen a movie, but has had movies thoroughly explained to him. Do I think it's a good movie? No. Do I think it's a strong movie that moves me on the level that art usually moves me? Absolutely not. But I can't say it's bad because it's so watchable. It's so fun. It's brought me so much joy. How can something that's bad do those things for me?”
The Room has had regular showings worldwide, with many as a monthly event. Fans interact with the film in a similar fashion to The Rocky Horror Picture Show; audience members dress up as their favorite characters, throw plastic spoons in reference to an unexplained framed photo of a spoon on a table in Johnny's living room, toss footballs to each other from short distances, and yell insulting comments about the quality of the film as well as lines from the film itself.
And now it’s your turn. As part of the Vodafone Comedy Carnival, Palas Cinema are showing a special screening of the so-bad-it's-funny cult classic with a special comedian introduction as part of VCCG19. We expect nothing but the best from our audience: tuxes, giant black blazers, cool shades, lots of ravishing black locks, and slinky red dresses are encouraged. Spoons will be provided upon entry!
